Family 'Food Discovery Club'

Harvard Medical School has produced a six week plan for Healthy Eating which we are using as a reference guide for a six week 'Food Discovery Club'.

The pilot is launched after half-term by the Soho Links extended schools cluster. Parents and children will be invited to attend. The guide's content includes;

  • a week by week action plan
  • guidance on setting goals for success
  • easy fixes for supermarket health
  • advice on smart supermarket choices
  • weight control tips
  • 14 delicious recipes

 Visit www.health.harvard.edu/books to purchase a copy of this guide.

Start a Food Diary

Session one is titled 'Start a Food Diary'. We will use the Food Standard Agency's Food Route resource which we piloted a couple of years ago with schools in the North East of England. The 'Diet and Health' worksheet is fantastic for helping parents understand the importance of a balanced and varied diet. We will review the Eatwell plate and use sugar, fat and salt models to help people understand which foods need to be eaten in moderation. At the end of the Foodroute worksheet, we'll talk parents through the table 'Where can we find these nutrients and what can they do?'

Each session also incorporates food tasters, a cookery demonstration and a physical activity taster for both parents and children to join in together.
